ABSTRACT

Biological treatment of the waste stream will be provided to reduce the organic loading on the active carbon filters and thereby maximize the run-time of the filters. A portable container was used to allow the pilot plant to be transported later to the Georgswerder landfill site. The pilot plant included a two-stage Sequencing Batch Reactor system, carbon filtration systems for gas and liquid streams and ancillary equipment. Leachate containing light-density fluids is passed through a provisional oil separator to separate the water and liquid organic phases for future incineration. The investigations were carried out with pilot-scale facilities that were housed in a portable container located on the grounds of the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg. Pilot-scale studies consisted of a series of tests to determine the oxygen transfer capacity of the silicon membrane oxygenation system and leachate treatability studies conducted in some trials.
