ABSTRACT

In order to design a solid waste disposal program for a twenty year period, the Authority has made estimates of total waste generation over a twenty year period between 1981 and the year 2001. Prior experience with leachate contamination of aquifers has made the state very sensitive to methods of disposal of solid wastes and sewage sludge. The actual growth rate will determine the rate of usage of the remaining landfill capacity and migration of wastes across county and state lines can materially reduce space available for landfills. In the meantime, many communities are moving towards beneficial combustion of solid waste as fuel for steam and electricity production. A treatability study of the leachate generated at Sandtown was conducted by Gaudy and Rozich of the University of Delaware. Periodically, leachate accumulating in the storage tanks is pumped into the leachate recharge wells.
