ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a 100 GPM wastewater treatment system recently designed to meet current regulations. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection has recently completed the public hearing process in anticipation of promulgating revised water regulations. Using analytic techniques, the authors discuss the affects of changing water quality regulations on technical design characteristics and on project economics. The Connecticut regulations will have the effect of making enforceable the water quality standards prohibiting concentrations which accumulate in aquatic biota. The effluent from the treatment facility was designed for discharge to a stream or a Publicly Owned Treatment Works. While there are Environmental Protection Agency Pretreatment Standards for the metal finishing industry, certain Connecticut effluent limitations for metal finishing wastes are more stringent. An ion exchange unit with a fixed bed and counter current operation was considered for the case study due to availability and success in similar applications.
