ABSTRACT

The particle shape analysis system which we have developed over the past decade has always been directed towards problem solving, generally in the field of sedimentary geology. The system which has evolved and the generalities discussed are not the result of comprehensive theoretical analysis concerning the fundamental nature of particle shape, nor the optimal mathematical expression of shape. The tactics of analysis of multiparticle shape data will be governed by two factors: the investigational objectives; and the nature of the shape frequency distribution. The general objectives for a shape measurement investigation defines the experimental design. The diversity of shapes within a sample reflects the diversity of the process which created the shapes. Each mode on the shape frequency distribution represents a shape family. Chi-square contingency table analysis compares two or more of the frequency histograms interval by interval.
