ABSTRACT

There are more than forty sites in Missouri which are known to be contaminated with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, the most toxic of the 75 possible dioxin isomers. The sites are located principally in two general regions: the first is in the east central part of the state, near St. Louis, and the second is in the southwest part of the state, near Verona, where the chemical plant which produced the dioxin is located. The city of Times Beach, which is located in eastern Missouri near St. Louis, is the most extensively contaminated area in the state. The US Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Missouri are spending over $33 million to purchase all Times Beach property and relocate the 800 families living there. When the buyout is complete, the State of Missouri will hold title to the land. Two blocks of the most heavily contaminated street have been set aside to be used for research.
