ABSTRACT

The corpora allata (CA) are a pair of insect endocrine glands closely associated with and innervated by the brain 1 (see also Chapter 4 of this book). The brain-corpora cardiaca (CC)-CA complex of insects is somewhat analogous to the hypothalamic-hypophyseal system of vertebrates. 2 Within this framework, the CA are analogous to the adenohypophysis of the vertebrate system. The CA produce juvenile hormone (JH), a sesquiterpene. Of the several identified JHs only JH III appears to be produced by the CA of the viviparous cockroach Diploptera punctata. 3
