ABSTRACT

To exist, every living organism must possess the functions of assimilation, autonomy, and reproduction. Without these vital activities an organism would quickly lose its individuality. Clearly, a constant and delicate equilibrium is required to ensure an organism’s maintenance. In insects, as in most animals, this task is accomplished by the synergistic action of the nervous and endocrine systems. The cells of these two systems are uniquely fashioned to transmit information from either the internal organic centers of command or the environment to target organs and tissues within the organism.
