ABSTRACT

Continuous fermentation tends to provide simplicity of operation, and requires that all other processes supporting the fermentation be conducted on a continuous level also. Product isolation and purification are normally performed by methods that are continuous or easily adapted to continuous. The advantages of continuous culture operations suggest an ideal system to conduct any type of biological fermentation. Continued research using continuous culture as a tool will need to be conducted on all levels of research before the full level of potential can be reached in the commercial process. A synthetic wastewater containing various concentrations of the pollutant and an authentic wood-preservative wastewater was examined by continuous addition to the reactor. The brewing industry has maintained interest in continuous fermentation for well over 2 decades. Many of the technological problems associated with continuous cultivation have been overcome by advances in beer fermentation.
