ABSTRACT

China has a diversity of geographical environments including temperate, subtropical, and tropical zones that allow for production of a great variety of fruits and vegetables that are hosts for tephritid fruit flies. Except for Dacus tau, Bactrocera Cucurbitae, Bactrocera dorsalis, and Dacus citri, the hosts of the other species are unknown. Bactrocera Cucurbitae is found in south and southwest China. Its preferred hosts are bitter melon, cucumber, and Luffa cylindrica. Dacus tau is widely distributed in south and southwest China. Its hosts include cucurbitaceous crops, papaya, guava, and carambola. Bactrocera dorsalis has been trapped in parts of central and east China and in south and southwest China. A program of release of sterile flies for control of the Chinese citrus fly was conducted in Guizhou Province in 1987 and 1989. The release of sterile D. citri was carried out in a Zhonglian orange orchard of about 34 hectares in Huishui County, Guizhou Province of southwest China in 1987 and 1989.
