ABSTRACT

Brunfelsia pauciflora Benth. var. calycina J. A. Schmidt is a shrub native to the coastal highlands of Brazil. Leaves are alternate, coriaceous, dark green, and 8 to 20 cm long. Stems are erect and sparsely branched. The plant is grown commercially as a pot plant for spring sale in Europe. Flowers have short peduncles and grow in a 3- to 5 flowered cyme. High amounts of nitrogen applied during the first part of the low-temperature treatment increased the number of flowers per plant. Nitrogen promotes growth of axillary buds which are still active in differentiating leaf primordia. Nitrogen promotes growth of axillary buds which are still active in differentiating leaf primordia. The taller the plants, the more flowers are produced and the better a high Nitrogen supply can be used. Similar interactions were found with temperature and light.
