ABSTRACT

Bryophyllums are succulents which belong to the family Crassulaceae and are native to the island of Madagascar. All species of Bryophyllum investigated so far will flower only after the transfer from long-day (LD) to short-day (SD) conditions, and not when grown continuously under either also differs from genuine Kalanchoe spp. Most of the research on flowering in Bryophyllum has been carried out with B. crenatum Baker and B. daigremontianum A. Berger, while some work has also been conducted with B. tubiflorum Harv. and B. calycinum Salisb. There is a striking difference in growth habit of Bryophyllum plants grown under SD and LD conditions. All Bryophyllum species have a juvenile phase during which they cannot be induced to flower by the transfer LDSD. Since Bryophyllum has a dual daylength requirement for flowering, there is a critical daylength for both the LD and the SD inductive treatment.
