ABSTRACT

Campanula fragilis Cyr. is native to southern Italy and is very similar to C. isophylla. The plant may be propagated by seeds and is grown as a hanging basket plant. Seedlings are very variable in leaf shape and size, stem length, and other characteristics. A single flower or pairs of flowers grow at the upper end of hanging stems of about 30 cm in the axils of the leaves. A corolla with five lobes, united near the base, is blue or sometimes white, and when fully opened is wide-spread. The diameter of fully opened flowers varies from plant to plant between 24 and 55 mm. A population of seedlings grown under different photoperiods, showed long-day responses. Although little information is available on the effects of temperature on flowering, it seems certain that flower development until anthesis is retarded at 15° as compared to 20°.
