ABSTRACT

Coriander belongs to the Umbelliferae family. It is indigenous to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. The dried ripe fruits are the spice known as coriander seed. Coriander is an ancient flavoring agent, used since very early times. Coriander is used as a condiment in curry powder. Its medicinal use is mainly as a tonic, stomachic, and flavoring agent for bitter remedies. Coriander is andromonoecious since on the same plant, and even in the same umbellet, both perfect and staminate flowers are found in all umbels. Mathon revealed that high temperatures enhanced vegetative development. It seems that there is no need for vernalization, and that the plants have facultative need for LD. In one cv the compounds reduced the number of staminate flowers, keeping the perfect flowers constant, while in the second cv the number of perfect flowers increased, keeping the male flowers constant.
