ABSTRACT

Endogenous to Europe, North Africa and temperate areas of Asia, Dactylis was introduced to all the world’s temperate areas. Dactylis can easily be grown with alfalfa as double cropping. Some environmental control was provided by planting seeds or transplants at different places in the field or by traditional greenhouses and coldrooms. Relative humidity is generally variable and mineral nutrition is not well monitored. Experiments where growth conditions are completely controlled are very rare. The tillers were of similar appearance and weight and were cultivated individually. Dactylis requires long days for floral initiation and development. Vernalization is a particular case of such a primary induction because the action of cool temperatures lowers the limit of requirements for the other factors.
