ABSTRACT

The genus Pisum, together with Cicer, Lathyrus, Lens, and Vicia are considered by J. Hutchinson to make up the tribe Vicieae of the family Leguminosae. The zygomorphic flowers are borne solitary or racemose on axillary peduncles. The control of flowering in the garden pea has been reviewed thrice before in depth and once in brief. This review is primarily concerned with events up to the time of open flower. However, there is no doubt that much can be learned about the nature of the flowering process by studying not only the events which precede the onset of flowering, but also those events which occur after flowering. Secondary stems and lateral branches should not be scored since the flowering node may be less or greater than that of the main shoot, depending on their point of origin. However, circumstances may at times necessitate the advised use of data from secondary stems to estimate flowering characteristics.
