ABSTRACT

Pomegranate is a member of the family Punicaceae, which originates in southern Asia. Many varieties are cultivated as fruit trees or ornamental plants. The most suitable variety for pot plant production is P. granatum ‘nana’, the so-called dwarf pomegranate. The American nursery trade labels the dwarf pomegranate as P. multiflora. Dwarf pomegranate is a miniature variety of the pomegranate fruit tree and when planted outdoors may reach a maximum height of 2 m. Shedding of leaves and flowers during shipment of potted plants is a major problem in the production of dwarf pomegranate. Dwarf pomegranates showed a quantitative SD response, but light intensity is the major factor influencing flowering in dwarf pomegranate. Plants flower freely under most temperature regimes both under SD and LD, provided light intensity is above 40 klx. Stem pruning and treatment with chlormequat promoted flowering.
