ABSTRACT

Stephanotis floribunda Brongn. (Asclepiadaceae) is a tropical herbaceous vine plant, native to Madagascar. Vines can grow 4 to 6 m during a growing season (summer), but growth is very slow in winter. Vine growth is most vigorous under FD and warm conditions, that is, a minimum of about 21°C. If supplementary illumination is supplied to vines growing with moderate vigor at the onset of short days (less than 12 hr), blooming may be enhanced over those vines not illuminated. Much of the success of photoperiodic lighting depends on the vigor and density of the vines. Flowering of Stephanotis floribunda is undoubtedly controlled by both long photoperiods and high temperatures if the plants are growing vigorously. The new shoots are capable of initiating flowers if the photoperiod is extended and the minimum temperatures are maintained at about 21°C.
