ABSTRACT

Torenia Fournieri Lindl includes annual herbs from tropical Cochin China, mostly grown in gardens, and belonging to the family Scrophulariaceae. Many studies of in vitro flowering have been carried out using organ fragments which easily form adventitious buds and subsequently floral buds in culture. Employing this in vitro experimental system, various environmental, chemical, and physiological factors controlling floral bud formation have been examined. This chapter describes studies on various factors affecting floral bud formation in in vitro cultured organ fragments. The effects of various growth regulators on in vitro floral bud formation have been examined by several workers. Using the same plant species, the opposite results in the effects of a particular growth regulator were often obtained. These differences in the effects of growth regulators seem to be due to the difference in the physiological state of explants.
