ABSTRACT

Collomia grandiflora Dougl. ex Lindl, is a herbaceous annual species in the Polemoniaceae, or phlox family. A single plant typically produces both closed or cleistogamous (CL), self-pollinating flowers, and open or chasmogamous (CH), often cross-pollinating flowers. 1 - 5 This phenomenon occurs throughout the geographic range of the species, which is the Pacific slope of North America. 5 The CL flowers show reduction in both the androecium and corolla. 3 In the cymose inflorescence of the primary axis, CL flowers are typically produced first, followed by a progression of intermediates, and then CH flowers. 2 , 3 There is then a basipetal progression of lateral inflorescences which are predominantly CH, then finally entirely CL at the base of the plant. 2 , 5 Entirely CL plants do occur in natural populations. 5 , 6
