ABSTRACT

Campanula poscharskyana Degen belongs to the family Campanulaceae which comprises about 300 species. Some are of horticultural interest, such as C. isophylla Moretti, 6 C. carpatica Jacq., C. fragilis Cyr., 9 C. medium L., 7 C. pyrimidalis L., 10 and C. portensch-lagiana Schult. 8 Some are used mainly as pot plants, others are used as perennial ornamental plants for gardens and for cut flower production. C. poscharskyana has, like most of the campanulas, a white milky sap. It is native to the mountainous areas of southern Europe, and is quite common in the northern part of Yugoslavia. 1-3 It has been cultivated for many years in northern Europe as a perennial garden plant. There is some variation among plants both in growth habit and flowering ability. Plants with hairy leaves flower poorly, while plants lacking leaf hairs were found to be valuable as ornamentals. 3 Recently, an abundantly flowering cultivar ‘Stella’ was introduced in Denmark as a pot plant. It is grown as a hanging basket plant (Figure 1).
