ABSTRACT

The genus Coreopsis belongs to the largest family of flowering plants, the Compositae, a family that includes many ornamental and crop plants. Within this family, Coreopsis is placed in the tribe Coreopsidae of the subspecies Heliantheae. The genus comprises 50 to 100 species, depending on how it is defined. Representatives are found in the floras of North America, the West Indies, Hawaii, and tropical Africa. 1–3 Coreopsis grandiflora Nutt. is native to the southern United States, where it grows on sandy or rocky soils from Florida to Texas and New Mexico, and north to Georgia, Missouri, and southern Kansas. The species has become naturalized in areas extending to Michigan, Indiana, and southern New England. 3 It was introduced into England in 1826 6 and is now found in Europe as well as in the Soviet Union. 4
