ABSTRACT

A genus of succulent, ornamental plants, Kleinia was previously included in the genus Senecio. It belongs to the subfamily Asteroideae of the Compositae. Several species of the genus Kleinia are grown as decorative or greenhouse plants, e.g., K. rowleyanus. K. arti-culata is attractive for its pale green succulent stems. This species and also K. repens originate from southern Africa. Both are commonly grown as ornamentals and are easily propagated vegetatively by rooting stem pieces. The two species have not been subjected to much scientific study, but the morphology and anatomy of K. articulala were investigated by Thoday and Woodhead 8 and also Thoday and Evans. 6 , 7 The influence of the environment on its growth was referred to by Reddington, 2 , 3 who recorded that the amount of growth made is affected by daylength. A detailed study of its growth and flowering was made by Schwabe 4 with particular reference to photoperiod; an accompanying study on leaf senescence was made at the same time. 5
