ABSTRACT

The genus Lychnis (Caryophyllaceae) includes approximately 35 species native to the Northern Hemisphere. They are annual or perennial plants, and some of them are hardy enough to survive winter temperatures in temperate climates. L. chalcedonica from eastern Russia and sometimes L. flosjovis or L. coronaria are of commercial interest for horticulture. Some hybrids, i.e., L. × haageana (L. fulgens × L. coronata) and L. × arkwrightii (ML. × haageana × L. chalcedonica) can serve as garden or pot plants because of their bright scarlet flowers.
