ABSTRACT

Atriplex canescens (Chenopodiaceae) is a facultative, halophytic evergreen shrub found in the semiarid regions of western North America. It belongs to a group of about 20 C4 shrubs 5 , 22-26 thought to have undergone evolutionary diversification during a relatively recent period as habitats became available. 35 More distantly related woody Atriplex shrubs are common in Australia. 22-26 A. canescens forms a polyploid complex (x = 9) with races ranging from 2x (diploid) to at least 12x. 7 , 41
