ABSTRACT
Organizations are discovering the benefits of the Internet and development tools such as Java in such activities as electronic commerce, customer service, and collaborative business applications. Systems development managers will need to understand how to use Java to take advantage of performance, reliability, security, and portability improvements possible in the new development environment. This chapter compares Java with other interpretive languages and discusses other issues, such as platform independence, communication protocols, and network performance.
