ABSTRACT

Under applications coexistence, so far, we have looked at two options. Starting with a typical UNIX desktop such as an X-terminal, we looked at solutions that added Windows applications access. We then looked at solutions that add UNIX applications access to a PC desktop. Realizing the requirements of the heterogeneous environments in many organizations, vendors are coming up with devices that are designed for performing as an “enterprise desktop” or a “multi-client desktop.” We will take a look at enterprise desktops. We will also take a look at emulators that emulate one environment under another so that applications that execute in one environment can be made to run in another environment. Unlike porting or applications that are written to execute in multiple environments, emulators do not need the source code.
