ABSTRACT

Environmental stress can be defined as something unfavorable to plant growth, but a more precise definition is needed. Conditions favorable to growth of one plant may be unfavorable to another. In the context used in this chapter, stress can be defined as “exposure to extraordinary unfavorable conditions at a given stage of development for the particular plant product of interest.” This definition, as proposed by Barfield and Gerber, 112 is a modification of that proposed by Larcher. 113
