Non-motile, non-sporing strains of anaerobic bacteria used to be separated into genera on the basis of morphology as follows:
Bacteroides — rods with rounded ends
Fusobacterium — rods with pointed ends
Sphaerophorus — pleomorphic rods
Dialister — very small rods
Leptotrichia — very large rods
