ABSTRACT
Lichens arc specific structural and functional entities formed by the association-of certain algae and fungi. The association is so close-knit that, in nature, lichens look and behave like distinct autonomous organisms. Yet they clearly have a dual nature and, in fact, represent one of the most successful experiments in mutualism, a type of symbiosis.1-3
