ABSTRACT

Some plant pathologists and plant virologists consider the classification of viruses as a controversial subject, and there has been no agreement on how to classify them within the unified system of virus classification. There is considerable agreement, however, concerning certain groups of plant viruses.13 A virus group has been defined as a collection of viruses or virus strains that share with a type member nearly all the main characteristics of the group. Groups of plant viruses have been proposed in a manner somewhat similar to that of "families" proposed for vertebrate viruses of the modern virus classification.36 Latin names have been accepted for only a few groups, and categories in which only a single member was known have been listed as “monotypic” groups.
