ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of Voice over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). It discusses networks where ATM is available for the data side of the network and the voice network has remained separate. ATM provides the quality of service like no other new network can. One of the key ATM applications for an ATM switch or multiplexer is the consolidation of voice traffic over ATM by interconnecting multiple PBXs across an ATM network. To provide a solution for voice consolidation over ATM, the Circuit Emulation (CE) module will interface to a PBX. The concept of Voice over ATM has changed and emerged as the winner in the “voice over" networking technologies. Voice over ATM makes strong financial sense and it delivers quality voice transmissions over the network. Structured and unstructured circuit emulation service is available from most vendors.
