ABSTRACT
Exchange of external sodium for intracellular protons is a fundamental process in cell growth and division. 1 – 6 Studies of this exchange and the subsequent cellular responses are vital to determine the role of this mechanism in the cell growth cycle. Such studies require methods capable of monitoring both sodium and pH gradients. Ideally, these techniques should be nondestructive and able to monitor cells under physiological conditions.
