ABSTRACT

The study of Na+/H+ exchange has drawn upon a variety of experimental techniques, including cell culture, plasma membrane vesicle techinques, pH-sensitive dyes, radiotracer flux techniques, and ion-specific electrode techniques. The present chapter will examine the uses of the last two of the aforementioned techniques with a goal of providing the reader some insight into the strengths and weaknesses of each. No attempt was made to completely review the literature of this field. Instead, examples were selected according to their appropriateness for illustrating discussion points, without citing all such results that could be found in the literature.
