ABSTRACT

The initial studies concerning the immunology of paracoccidioidomycosis were carried out by Fava Netto in 1960 at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine, University of Sao Paulo. Giraldo et al., based on a study related to the pathogenesis of the disease, proposed the following classification of clinical forms. Paracoccidioidomycosis infection: initial forms, nt or residual forms. Paracoccidioidomycosis appears to exhibit variations in the frequency of the clinical forms in different regions of the same country or even in different countries. Concerning clinical aspects, it should be stressed that in childhood paracoccidioidomycosis is essentially a disease of the reticulo-endothelial system. The clinical features of the disease in childhood and adults are so different that Giraldo et al., based on a study carried out in a group of 46 patients, were able to clearly differentiated two clinical types—the adult type, and the juvenile type.
