ABSTRACT

The modern particle measurement laboratory should be equipped for various methods of particle size analysis including electrozone, photozone, elutriation, sedimentation, sieving, and microscopy. The electrozone method has the best combination or high resolution, size range, sensitivity, and mildness of secondary effects, thus justifying this thorough presentation of its usage. In the operation of a particle measurement laboratory, there are initial points to consider for incoming samples for size analysis: safety, protection of sample integrity, and condition as received. Size span advice from the sample supplier is often checked at the laboratory by microscope, along with such factors as agglomeration and shape. In the electrozone measurement principle, particles suspended in an electrolyte are caused to flow through a small orifice in a nonconductive material, along with an electric current. Electrolytes for electrozone measurements must have effective properties; specifically, a suitable electrical conductivity and physicochemical neutrality toward the particles.
