ABSTRACT

The pulp and Wisconsin paper mill and the landfill are owned by the Nekoosa Packaging Corporation, which has been a division of the Great Northern Nekoosa Corporation since September 1, 1987. Prior to this the company was Owens-Illinois Inc. Forest Products Division which operated the pulp and paper mill using a nonsulfur process to produce corrugating medium. This chapter utilizes the term Nekoosa Packaging when referring to the activities done by either Nekoosa Packaging Corp. or Owens-Illinois Inc. The waste types disposed at Nekoosa Packaging landfill are generally described as nonhazardous solid wastes in the amount of approximately 100,000 cubic yards per year. Nekoosa Packaging has always operated very responsibly, recognizing the importance of waste reduction and recycling, by incorporating various strategies into their operations to minimize solid waste generation. Landfill design practices are continually changing, both to meet regulatory requirements and to use best practical technologies to achieve environmental protection.
