ABSTRACT

The Shuaiba Industrial Area (SIA) in Kuwait is one of the largest industrial complexes in the Arabian Gulf region. It generates some 23,000 m 3 /d of industrial wastewater, which is discharged to the sea after partial treatment or with no treatment. Additional 3000 mVd of sanitary wastewater is also discharged without treatment. The flow for the year 2000 is projected to average 35000 m 3 /d and to peak at 50,000 mVday. Presently, there are almost 12 major industries in SIA including petrochemical companies, three refineries, two power plants and an industrial gas corporation. Figure 1 presents the SIA with respect to Kuwait City and to other Gulf States.
