ABSTRACT

Failure of structures is often due to service induced defects propagation or to fabrication defects to be considered as starters of service induced defects.

Failure prevention and product liability of long life structures are thus often depending on or correlated with inspection effectiveness of these structures. Such inspections are conducted as fabrication controls or inservice inspection.

Neither the effectiveness nor the reliability of the procedure for the application of NDT techniques are correctly evaluated in many cases of industrial applications.

The discrepancy between the capability of a technique or of a combination of techniques and the effective performance of a procedure when applied by human beings is often very large.

The present paper reports on the effectiveness of NDT techniques as applied for industrial controls.
