ABSTRACT

The following paper discusses a number of the areas in which the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) is making use of probabilistic safety insights to help make safety, regulatory, licensing, resource allocation, and other decisions. Risk insights are used by the USNRC to help determine the safety significance of events that occur daily at commercial nuclear power plants, to help determine the need for the USNRC to pay special attention to some plants or utilities, to help identify unique plant vulnerabilities, to help justify Technical Specification modifications, to help set the priorities for certain USNRC inspection activities, and to help determine the priority of generic safety issues.
