ABSTRACT

In May of 1989, a $12 million renovation of the Urbana, Illinois, High School was completed. A major renovation project for the Urbana High School provided an opportunity to incorporate a number of safety features into the science laboratories. This chapter focuses on the safety considerations used in the relocation of the science laboratories, which were a part of this project. The concern for life safety in the science laboratories was viewed as part of the total life safety planning for the project. The State of Illinois enacted a school safety code entitled "Efficient and Adequate Standards for the Construction of Schools"; Circular Series A, No. 156, which is the operative code for new school construction and additions after July 1, 1965. The life safety considerations of the completed project and during the phased construction had a significant impact on design decisions.
