ABSTRACT

Corporate users are increasingly demanding faster transport speed. This is driven by the type of media being employed and shared among workers, such as documents, images, and training material. This material is being augmented by e-mail communication and increasingly by desktop videoconferencing. Frame relay is the fastest growing wide area connection technology, and the beginnings of a demand for Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) are emerging. Both frame relay and ATM are the prime interexchange carrier services offered to bridge city, state, and the national locations. World high-bandwidth connection services are emerging as corporations attempt to meld their national networks into a blend of high-bandwidth connectivity provided by such consortiums as AT&T's World Partners Frame Relay Consortium, which partner to deliver integrated world frame relay service. ATM to the desktop is driven by the requirement for a variety of media to be delivered over the same connection to the desktop applications and disk storage.
