ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the nature of “flange curling” in slender flanges, the situations in which it is likely to arise in design, and how account may be taken of it. Reference is made to the authors’ own tests and also tests carried out by others. The author’ tests are also used to validate non-linear large-deflection analyses using both finite elements and third-order “Generalised Beam Theory”, thus allowing the test results to be augmented by further parametric studies. Some appropriate conclusions are drawn.
