ABSTRACT

The cutaneous syndrome of erythema nodosum and often also erythema multiforme is a common complication to infection with Yersinia enterocolitica. Erythema nodosum has historically been linked to many infections. Infection with Y. pseudotuberculosis has often been associated with erythema nodosum. As known, erythema nodosum is often accompanied by pain of the joints, especially those of the legs and arms; 52% of the cases of erythema nodosum stimulated by Y. enterocolitica and 2.3% of the controls had such symptoms. It may be stated that a patient, especially a woman, with erythema nodosum or erythema multiforme developing after intestinal disorders must be suspected to have had yersiniosis. The answer to the question of how often erythema nodosum is a complication of yersiniosis due to Y. enterocolitica may reside in the registration of such cases in a district in South Sweden where the incidence is high.
