ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the solutions for complex problems in science, engineering, environment, and society—solutions that often require innovative approaches implemented on latest high-performance computing technology. The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is a research institute for applied mathematics and computer science. Berlin has a long tradition in joining forces to the benefit of its researchers and scientists in the three universities and non-university research institutes. From the year 2013 on, this financial burden could no longer be carried by the two HLRN sites in Berlin and Hanover. Consequently the HLRN board decided to jointly finance the costs for system maintenance and energy, starting with the HLRN-III in 2013. Three supercomputer systems have been installed until today: HLRN-I in 2002, HLRN-II in 2008, and HLRN-III in 2013. These systems are jointly operated at ZIB and at Leibniz University IT Service in Hanover. The projects at HLRN cover a wide variety of scientific areas and research topics with different computational demands.
