ABSTRACT

The use of OCT in oral tissues was proposed and demonstrated in the very first images of OCT in dentistry, and then has been exploited in clinical environment. This chapter will deal with the developments towards clinical applications, involving the OCT application for periodontics and other soft tissue benignant lesions in the oral cavity. Starting with the concepts and management of periodontal diseases, we describe the current and classical evaluation methods, the structures that need to be considered in the evaluation methods, then we describe the state-of-the-art in OCT studies in periodontics and give final concluding remarks at the end. OCT in periodontics is certainly an important niche of application for OCT, since it takes advantage of the non-invasiveness because the use of manual invasive probes can ultimately interfere in the diagnostics.
