ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how Building Information Modelling (BIM) is used and implemented within a large construction project and how this use relates to other projects and related business networks. It discusses the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) approach as useful in examining the effects of using new technology in networks. The chapter presents a discussion on the specificities of construction innovation and how this can be viewed from an IMP perspective. It provides some notes on the method and a presentation of the empirical case of New Karolinska Solna hospital project (NKS), the use of BIM on the project and its effects on the organisation of actors, resources and activities. One main effect of the NKS project was, for instance, the development and introduction of a new BIM platform. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how the use of technology relates to the connectivity of interdependent actors, resources and activities in business networks.
