ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on construction logistics activities to illustrate construction industry efficiency improvements due to innovation. It discusses the great potential for improvements to construction logistics and explores innovation as changes to activity interdependencies. The chapter proposes a framework to analyse construction logistics innovation. It also discusses some methodological issues and describes the underlying study. It also describes the case of ConSite Logistics (CSL) and other initiatives exemplifying construction logistics innovation. CSL performs logistics analysis prior to project start and/or undertakes on-site logistics operations during the project production phase. CSL is responsible for logistics coordination, but CSL’s level of logistics involvement differs among projects. The chapter analyses construction logistics innovation in terms of the reorganizing of activities. It concludes with an identification of connectivity in the form of interdependencies among activities, resources and actors, across projects, and their importance for innovation: their connectivity allows change to develop and diffuse.
