ABSTRACT

Oats are popularly used as feed and fodder. Oat ranks sixth in world cereal production. Oat is preferred for hay making. Slowly it has gained importance worldwide as food, feed, and fodder. Its distribution has increased widely due to its adaptability to a broad range of soil types. Oat is originated from Asia Minor. From single cut, 400-450 quintals of green fodder per hectare, and from multicut, 500-550 quintals of green fodder per hectare are produced. Average yield of grains is about 15-20 quintals per hectare. The chemical composition of the green fodder varies with the stage of harvest. Oat is preferred for conservation in the form of hay all over the world. It contains 7-9% crude protein, which can be increased up to 11% by adding nitrogen fertilizers.
