ABSTRACT

Job’s tears is a group of grasses belonging to the family Poaceae and popularly known as “Job’s tears.” Under that designation is included not merely the species of Coix but of Chionachne, and probably also of Polycota. The plant is a native of Southeast Asia and is found widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Indication is given of an ancient cultivation which may have taken its birth in China and spread through the Malayan regions into Burma and then to Assam and to other places in India. On an average the coix green fodder yielded about 600-700 quintal per hectare under good management practice. Coix seed yield varies from 1.8 to 2.1 q ha−1 depending upon crop management. The herbage contains 8.5% crude protein and 28.0% crude fiber. It is mixed with molasses and concentrates to make it more palatability.
