ABSTRACT

The Department of Civil and Architecture Engineering of Catania, within the project RE.S.E.T., has implemented an “ITS Laboratory”. Specifically, it is a traffic monitoring, estimation and short-term forecasting system, equipped with radar sensor and a central control station for traffic data elaborations.

The main focus of this study concerns the model development and the implementation of this system and a systematic investigation of its functionalities is made in order to identify opportunities to enable the next generation of ITS technologies to contribute to lower energy usage and GHG emissions and to optimize the existing infrastructure and transportation systems.

The final aim of this work is to increase the knowledge of the actual dynamic of road traffic in urban areas and to obtain useful data and information that can contribute to the implementation of an optimal control of mobility system.
